Even though we’ve been enjoying the beautiful weather for a few weeks now, yesterday was the “official” beginning of summer. You didn’t think twice about switching your sweaters for sundresses and snow boots for sandals, but did you consider updating your skin care routine as well? While a major overhaul isn’t necessarily needed, smaller tweaks can mean big payoffs, especially if you want a flawless complexion.
Think sunscreen is only for summer Fridays and weekends? “UVA rays go through windows in cars, offices and homes and taking a lunch break outside or walking in a city can still cause a lot of sun exposure,” New York City dermatologist and psychiatrist Dr. Amy Wechsler reminds us. Plus, the sun isn’t the only culprit in drying out your skin. Chilly air conditioning also plays a major role, so finding a hydrating moisturizer is equally as important during the summer months. Those with oily skin can skip layering a moisturizer under a sunscreen and opt for a hybrid formula instead.
The sun’s harsh rays can also cause your skin to have an adverse reaction to your favorite fall and winter products. “I would stay away from retinol in summer,” cautions Joanna Vargas, celebrity facialist and founder of Joanna Vargas Salon and Skincare Collection. “They are too risky for bad burns and sun damage — switch to an enzyme mask instead.”
