How to Go Bronde, This Summer’s Hottest Hair Color

Blake Lively debuted her new hair color to the world on Instagram earlier this week and just like that, a bronde hair color trend was reborn (yes, it has already had a moment in the hair world). And since it’s the talk of the town, we decided to interview Jennifer Roskey, director of hair color at Civello Chicago, to see what all the hair hype was about. Once you’re done reading up on the trend, check out the slideshow for some bronde celebrity hairspiration.

theFashionSpot: Explain bronde.

Jennifer Roskey: Bronde hair color is a mix of blonde and brunette hues. The movement started a few years ago when Gisele Bündchen hit the red carpet with her new lightened locks. However, this summer it has really taken off and can be seen on J.Lo, Chrissy Teigen, Cara Delevingne and now, Blake Lively. The popularity of the trend has risen in the summer months because of the sun-kissed look it creates. The warm browns and soft blonde laced together create a tropical feel.

tFS: Bronde vs. ombre?

JR: Bronde describes the color of the hair, while ombre focuses on the placement of the color. Bronde creates a warm, soft, romantic feeling — it’s not as intense as ombre.

tFS: Bronde vs. babylights?

JR: Bronde is more impactful than subtle highlights. With bronde, you are painting larger hair strands as opposed to babylights, when you color very small pieces.

tFS: How does one get the perfect bronde?

JR: The bronde look is achieved by lightening the hair. I typically paint select layers on top of the hair with two different volumes of color-lifting creams.

tFS: How do you properly maintain a bronde mane?

JR: I always recommend that my clients use a color-conserving shampoo. My favorite is Aveda Color Conserve Shampoo. Pairing that shampoo with Aveda Camomile Conditioner will enhance the warm tones, add shine and maintain your color so it lasts longer. Aveda Color Conserve Daily Color Protect is another great product that will keep your hair looking like new.

tFS: Will bronde stay through fall?

JR: The colors in a bronde shade will transition to incorporate coppers and reds. The intermixed hair color will become warmer and richer for the colder months.
