"There are a number of approaches you can take to treat hyperpigmentation," says Annet King, director of global education at Dermalogica. "To start, wear a minimum SPF of 30 each and EVERY day, no matter the forecast. When choosing topical treatments, look for ingredients like rice extract and avoid kojic acid and hydroquinone, which both have a huge potential for sensitization. Hydroquinone, in addition to being banned in most other countries, can cause skin to turn bluish or even white (loss of pigment) if overused, and is linked to contact dermatitis."
