Trina Turk Talks Expansion, California and Floral Beauty Backstage at Trina Turk

“We always stay true to our roots,” designer Trina Turk said backstage at her show. “The brand is all about that optimistic California lifestyle. Our customer loves color, prints, life, and these are all elements we keep in mind season after season. The way we’re evolving is by expanding into other categories.”

Turk singled out handbags and menswear as being particularly strong new categories (there were plenty of shirtless men roaming around backstage). “Our menswear isn’t for everyone — you can’t be afraid of color! But a lot of times we’ll get a guy who goes out in one of our bright pieces and he sees that he’s the life of the party, and he becomes a devoted customer.”

In keeping with the brand’s California identity and the collection’s vibrant color palette, the makeup’s focal point was a bold turquoise eye. “The look is a bouquet of colors,” said Stila Global Director of Creative Artistry Jason Araujo. “The hues are like the petals of a flower with a soft finish, but opaque in color.” The key eye product used was Stay All Day Waterproof Smudge Stick in turquoise.

Esther Langham for Beauty.com using PHYTO and T3 Tools spearheaded the hair look, which was inspired by “a girl going to a flower market — she’s California healthy with a fresh ease.” This translated into a look that is very easy to recreate. Mousse was applied on wet hair and worked back into the models’ roots. Volumizing spray then was applied from the middle of the hair down to the tips. Next, stylists sectioned the hair off at the nape of the neck and used a medium round brush to blowdry the hair back and straight. Once the hair was dry, it was pinned up to keep volume. After taking the clips out, glossing cream was applied on the roots and ends, hair was center parted and secured with a wide hair band.
