Why has the Irish designer turned her hand to denim? In a recent interview with Grazia to celebrate the launch, Rocha explained that it was the fact that denim is typically thought of as workwear and so she wanted the challenge of breaking the rules. Mission accomplished. Her final pieces carry no trace of that typical tomboyish aesthetic that’s usually synonymous with denim.
The transformation was achieved with the injection of volume and ruffles creating gentle, feminine-feeling frills. Plus, Rocha told Grazia that “for this collection for J Brand I wanted to use colour to create emotion.” It’s interesting to see just how different colour can make the exact same piece feel entirely different as a pastel pink makes for a very girly feel, black keeps it sleek and classic, but red imbues the garments with sultry appeal.
Installations of the special collaboration are on display at Dover Street Market stores in New York, London and Tokyo.
If you weren’t a massive denim fan before, then this collection could quite possibly have you coveting more than a staple pair of skinny jeans.
