3 Emerging Designers Rise to the Top at London Fashion Week

Eudon Choi

Much of the fashion industry already has its eye on Eudon Choi. The young Korean-born designer initially moved to London to complete an MA in womenswear at the Royal College of Arts, and he was even awarded the LYCRA®Style Emerging Talent Award at the WGSN Global Fashion Awards in New York in 2011. Since then, he’s made his London Fashion Week debut back in February of this year and this season he’s returned to showcase his Space Oddity-entitled Spring 2013 collection.

His futuristic collection was mainly inspired by cinematic classics such as Stanley Kubrick’s movie, 2001: Space Odyssey, and the world of science fiction. You may have also noticed that he’s heavily inspired by the legendary singer David Bowie as the title of his collection pays homage to one of his albums.

Space Oddity encompasses his signature contrasting blocked colours and textures. The futuristic look is further achieved via exaggerated shapes, which are often box cut, and with patent leather raincoats being updated with dimpled lurex. Blacks and cobalt hues were key, as the looks were accessorised with tinsel covered plant pot shaped hats and Perspex heeled shoes.

We honestly loved Choi’s collection and it really was by far one of our favourites of the week.

Huishan Zhang

The well travelled Chinese designer Huishan Zhang now permanently resides in London, and he counts being accepted to the British Fashion Council’s NEWGEN scheme in A/W 12 amongst his successes.

His design signature of mixing Chinese tradition with Western influence and modernity is prevalent in his S/S 13 collection, whereby his cultural heritage is exemplified via the utilisation of ancient birds, patterned lace, and mahjong tiles. The theme of elegant finery guides the usage of exquisite silk with smooth organza, with Swarovski crystals being the choice of embellishment.

Zhang’s designs clearly demonstrate couture style attributes which is sure to make him a future hit amongst red carpet regulars.

Caroline Charles

Caroline Charles is by no means an emerging designer and has been a London Fashion Week regular for many years, but there’s no doubting that these days her international recognition is slightly overshadowed by fashion’s latest hottest designers. We, on the other hand, couldn’t refuse an invite by the lady who used to work with the legendary Mary Quant.

Charles’ signatures are grown up glamour, sophistication, and modern shapes. Her S/S 13 catwalk show was livestreamed and showcased in Somerset House’s prime location of the Courtyard. The show commenced with a riot of tropical prints which began on the swimwear pieces and spread to the separates. Elegant floor length drop-waist dresses and bold cropped jackets came thick and fast, with a breathtaking almost bridal-like white dress accessorized with an oversized brimmed hat as the perfect finale piece.
