Carine Roitfeld Says She’s ‘The Winner’ of Her Feud with Emmanuelle Alt

Wilson writes:

“Maybe this was not supposed to be a friendship,” Ms. Roitfeld said. “If I look at the balance, maybe I lost some people I thought were my friends, but I made so many new friends. I am very happy, in the end, because I am the winner.”

Sorry? That French accent can be tough. Did you say … ?

I am the winner,” she repeated. “At the end of the day.”

Well, so, a few things. First off, I’m glad Carine is coping with her new free agent status so well. Leaving a job can be tough for anyone, especially when the job happens to be one of the most prestigious positions in the entire fashion industry. And she’s right, maybe her relationship with Alt wasn’t supposed to be a friendship; whatever kind of friendship they’d had, it certainly wasn’t strong enough to withstand the infighting and scrutiny that marked Carine’s departure from Paris Vogue.

But the funny thing about friendships, even the kind that have fallen apart, is that they aren’t competitions. That isn’t just a truism, it’s also true. And saying that you’re the winner is a surefire sign that you actually feel like a loser. Maybe Emmanuelle Alt feels like a loser, too. Maybe Emmanuelle and Carine should just get over themselves and be friends again.
