Nude and crimson red were not only major fashion trends at this year’s Golden Globes, they were big beauty trends as well. While the season’s must-have shade, orange, did make a few appearances – including on Heidi Klum – it was the contrast between pale lips and steamy red lips that stole the night.
Natalie Portman‘s Victor and Rolf gown may have been a flop (above, left), but the actress did a wonderful job coordinating her dress and makeup; the hand-embroidered red rose that was fastened to the front of her strapless gown matched her lip color perfectly, and contrasted beautifully with her fair complexion. Piper Perabo (above, right) also chose vampy red to offset her classic black gown, and paired it with a sleek ponytail for the big night.
The riskiest red lip of the night, however, belonged to January Jones (above), who went bold with her beauty as well as with her bondage-inspired skin-exposing Versace gown in bright red. She paired her look with Chanel Rouge Allure Extrait de Gloss in Excess. The actress’ look was created by Chanel makeup artist Rachel Goodwin, who said that the Mad Men actress’ look “was all about strength – there was nothing demure about it! I wanted to go for a super strong brow, and a high-gloss red lip. 90s supermodel meets old Hollywood glamour!”
Pale lips, on the other hand, are a great way to tone down an ensemble, which Sandra Bullock (above, left) and Olivia Wilde (above, right) did beautifully; both women opted for heavily embellished dresses and brow-grazing, long bangs, which were offset by nude lips. Elizabeth Moss and Tilda Swinton took this trend to the extreme, both looking so natural we’re not sure they were wearing any makeup at all!
When it came to hair, we saw a slew of sleek ponytails, a refreshing trend for busy women on the go. Jennifer Lopez, Hailee Steinfeld, Julianne Moore (above, left), Piper Perabo and Kaley Cuoco were just a few of the ladies who opted for this hair style; it works just as well with bangs or without them, and with pencil straight hair or loose curls. Speaking of loose curls, Dianna Agron, Milla Jovovich (above, right), Megan Fox, January Jones, and Jayma Mays all opted for face-skimming soft curls to complement their gowns.
In between these two drastically different looks, there was a mixed bag of sleek updos, bobs, and chignons, which stars like Amy Adams, Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson (above, left), Emma Stone (above, right), Jennifer Lawrence, and Mila Kunis opted for.
Christina Hendricks (above, left) was a disappointment this year, and we’re sad she didn’t learn her lesson from Golden Globes 2010. The actress wore a one-shoulder ruffled Romona Keveza gown that reminded us of her awful peach Christian Siriano number, and her frazzled hair and colorful eye makeup, set against her flaming red hair, was total overkill. Angelina Jolie and Anne Hathaway (above, right) both looked effortless and wonderful, with minimal makeup and feminine waves.
