It happens to the best of us. We buy a new pair of earrings. We wear them once. It’s like there’s a party happening on our earlobes. Cut to the next day, one of them is MIA. Lame, we know, but the next time it happens, no need to cry, search or repurchase. The Spring 2017 runways were filled with statement earrings of every shape and style, many of them sizeable, single and ready to mingle with simple studs.

Gucci, Rosie Assoulin, Stella McCartney, Celine, Proenza Schouler, Simone Rocha and more gave eye-grabbing odes to the ear. Rocha’s whimsical, toothy take on the classic hoop was an especially big hit among the fashion set. Jonathan Anderson, future Uniqlo collaborator, showed drop earrings of the spherical and hammered metal variety, some in couples, some all by their lonesome. Saint Laurent and Marni made the case for (gem-encrusted) mismatched baubles.

Stuck in a styling rut? A solid pair of statement earrings revitalizes any tired outfit. They’re the perfect way to dip your toes in the maximalist trend — or help an over-the-top ensemble reach peak wild. We prefer to complement loud lobes with a simple jumpsuit, turtleneck, T-shirt or button-up. Pair colorful earrings with an easy black-and-white outfit or up the ante with complementary hues, the choice is yours. Fans of the late George Michael (and/or the multiple piercing trend), pick one earring that’s destined to stand out, match the rest of your metals accordingly, then go for a tonal look that’ll really make your jewelry pop.
As for the rest of your face, slicked-back hair puts your ear exhibit on full display. (Pro tip: Statement earrings plus sleek bun equals an instantly put-together look.) Alternatively, framing artsy ear candy with loose tresses gives one an air of stylish insouciance. (As in, yes, my enormous geometric drop earrings and free-flying strands are a tangle nightmare waiting to happen, what of it?) Coat your lips with a clear balm or, for added fun, a vibrant lipstick that plays off your accessories.
