Beverly Johnson

Thanks to Omifan for the pics.

Does anyone have more pics of her? Preferably from her prime.

I was watching some show on E! today, and she was featured on there. Gorgeous woman, but was she really big at one time? I can't recall her like I can other models from the 80's and 90's.

Yeah I saw her on there today too. She was also a special guest judge last season on Top Model. She was the first Black woman to be featured on Vogue, so yes, she was big. She came out in the 70s though, so she was among the supermodels of the 80s. She was friends with Janice Dickinson.

Beverly was amazing - she had her Vogue covers in like 1974-1976, though she was definitely quite successful til 82 or so.

This one is from 1980 British Vogue, Alex Chatelain.

Once again Sepia you beat me to posting! Bev J was a very successful print girl, she did runway and commercials too. Although Ophelia Devore, Helen Williams, Donyale Luna, Naomi Sims & Peggy Dillard broke down many barriers, she was the most commercial. By the mid 70s she was one of the biggest of all models. Of course since she was the top the media pitted her against an upstart by the name of Iman, sound familiar ! She started in 1971 & hit quickly and peaked about 1982, however she still got covers and work a bit afterwards. Her first agency was Ford. She since has been a singer(late 70s), written books and is in the business of hair. Below are some photos from my collection(1972-1981 & 1988), I will possibly look for more. Photo Source:Francesco Scavullo, Richard Avedon, scanned by me

Facts:
She had 2 Glamour covers within months of each other(1972).
1st black woman on the cover of Vogue US(8/1974).
1st black woman on the cover of French Elle.
2nd black woman on the cover of Cosmo(2/1976).
